Long live A24. It's exactly what we always needed. Best of luck to the lone black guy. We're rooting for ya to survive this, buddy. I really really really didn't like this movie. My husband still gives me crap for making us watch it. Now I'm not allowed to pick movies anymore lol. What rubbish, honestly - 2 couples asked me after the show whether they'd missed anything to appreciate this. I reassured them that they hadn't. Professional Swedish woman here: 1. Add some sins for the runes to be incorrect. Really man they just suck, all of them are just a jumble of different letters meaning nothing. And they're supposed to be in Hälsingland, a part of Sweden with the most runestones. One of these runes isn't even a rune! It's just a slob of lines! Aaahh! 2. Ättestupan is an actual thing. But from what I've heard from my family we didn't sacrifice old people of it, we just yeeted them of a cliff to their death because they became a burden for our families and we couldn't take care of them any more. I'd guess it would be around 1840-1850 if it ever happened. I don't think we've ever done it, it's more of a running joke. I'll ask my mom. 3. Runic embroidery on dresses. I have never seen that. Ever. Not even on clothes from the viking era. Vikings just didn't write that much. 4. The painting inside their bedroom are of the kind that can be found inside old churches. They used to be painted onto the ceiling and served as an education tool for those who couldn't read. I'm not sure if there are any, but from what I know there are none with runes on. If there are writing it would be in Carolingian miniscule, a latin alphabet the monks used when describing their texts. 5. The pissing scene. Honestly, no one in Sweden would care. As long as you're a little bit off into the bushes, back facing the people, piss away. We even send it in television. 6. The maypole is supposed to be a symbol of fertility. It's literally supposed to be a giant dick. I still dance around it. I think they tried to do a vagina maypole some years back. 7. Everyone knows English. Sure, a bunch of older folks have really thick accents, but it is really rare to find someone who don't know any English at all. 8. Skål. Yes, skål is Swedish for cheers. Otherwise a perfect depiction of my midsommar.
If I'm going to watch a movie about Sweden and Swedish people, I do no want to see diversity. I certainly don't want to see a Jewish film message about Europeans because it's always negative.

The best way to describe this movie is the word you used, Pretentious. This movie is made by pretentious people for pretentious people and pretentious movie fans who attended 'film school. Let me explain: From a technical standpoint, this movie hits all the marks. However from the practical standpoint, this movie is just dull and boring and fails to deliver. So what happens is hardcore movie nerds breakdown this movie and upload their 'film analysis' for their film school project. And a pretentious movie goer would want to pretend like they are not retarded so they end up watching these so called film analysis and pretend that they like it. All so that their pretentious asses could pat themselves on the back for understanding a 'complex' story.
Weird how Hollywood is dead-on about cult culture. When you sit down in a theater and see the A24 logo, thats when you know youre not coming out the same way you came in. I could picture this movie being called IKEA: origins. "Midsommar" is the latest film from Ari Aster, and is about a group of college students who travel to a Swedish commune to celebrate a customary and honorary festival held every ninety years. In 2018, Hereditary, Aster's feature film debut, drew a great amount of attention for its originality, and straying from the current style that many horror films are made in nowadays. I remember seeing "Hereditary" last summer around this time, and just feeling shocked by it. That movie just felt truly scary, and had a very investing story, along with well drawn out characters to follow. Naturally, when I heard about "Midsommar, I was very excited, and couldn't wait to see it once it hit theaters. I even avoided watching trailers for this film, in order for the experience to be as fresh as possible when the time came. I didn't really know what to expect from this film, and after seeing it this morning, I feel very ambivalent. Just as the cinematography in "Hereditary" was brilliant, Midsommar" does not disappoint in that aspect. The shots in this film range from beautiful wides of the open country paralleled with very complex and grotesque images that were truly horrifying, even more so than certain scenes from "Hereditary." The commune that the group visits has a mysterious feeling to itself, as well as the natural environment surrounding them. Due to the physical circumstances related to the geography of the setting, it creates a tone much more different than most horror movies. While most horror films focus on darker colors, Midsommar" blends in very uplifting colors that contrast the sinister events occurring at the commune. This artistic choice is unique, as it does make the film less "scary, but instead more uneasy and unsettling. A common idea that bad things happen at night, and that everything will be okay in broad daylight is challenged by the inability to feel protected when the sun is out. The score by Bobby Krlic is very creepy, and one of my favorite aspects of the film. The music slowly builds up tension, that never reaches it peak, yet never allows for a release, leaving an empty feeling in the stomach, having a cerebral feeling of anxiety. "Midsommar" explores themes of dealing with loss, as well as the need for community, that I thought were well done and rather interesting. While "Midsommar" does a lot of technical facets exceptionally well, there are points where the film does feel confused. While it tries to have intricate themes weaved throughout, some characters feel like they are just there to be pretty. Will Poulter's character, while portrayed well, simply does not need to be in the film. While Florence Pugh is exceptional and her character is well developed, her boyfriend, portrayed by Jack Reynor, seemed shallow in his feelings, and even the performance. "Midsommar" also falls into the predictability trope, and is rather disappointing in that characteristic. One of the things that made "Hereditary" so great was the inability to really know what was going to happen (although if you paid extremely close attention to detail, there was some foreshadowing, while "Midsommar" doesn't have that same level of unpredictability. Something that can make this film hard to bear is its pace, which turns into a turtle race once the second act hits. Having a slow pace isn't bad, but "Midsommar" drags very much, and is definitely too long. After thinking about the film a lot, taking in its good and bad parts, I think there is something noteworthy about this movie, as it does seem to fall into a clichéd horror movie formula with its characters, but it isn't a conventional horror film. "Midsommar" isn't necessarily about being petrified, but looking at the circumstances, and finding the meaning from what the commune's culture represents, and how it relates to Florence Pugh's character struggles. Definitely not a perfect movie, but an interesting one that some people will like, and some won't. I would suggest checking it out and seeing what you think for yourself, because this movie will definitely divide people.
